Some wise words from the artist for today, Amanda Rigby;
This piece was inspired by the name of a film by Morgan Spurlock, exploring the commercialisation of Christmas, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0939681/
So, Christmas… Yeah of course I love it, and I love receiving gifts – doesn’t everybody? But how many of the things we give and receive at this time of year truly enrich our lives? Most years I will freely admit that I struggle to buy for some family members because I haven’t spent enough time with them to be able to know what they truly want or need. In reality, it’s easier to buy some socks and chocolates than it is to lavish love, attention and support on them throughout the year. Not to be judgey of course – we all do it.
The good news is that there’s still a week to go… So, pop in to see your nan, phone your auntie, take the little people to the park. And whilst you’re at it, pin back your ears – make it your mission to listen to who they are, what makes them happy, what you can do to help. It’s unlikely that another Disneyfied pink fairy or blue car will really make their soul sing. As a wise man once said, “If you want to see what children can do, you must stop giving them things.” Could the same be said for adults? We’re all just big kids anyway aren’t we?
